Ukraine's Population
The population of Ukraine is around 48 mln people. Ukraine is the 5th
in Europe and the 21st in the World. Ukrainian population sets 7,3% of
population of Europe and 1% of the World population. 68% of Ukrainians
live in cities and 32% - in rural areas.The average density of
population of Ukraine is 85 people per square kilometer.
Ethnic Ukrainians make up more than 70% of the total population of
about 48 mln people. Other ethnic groups: Russians 17.3%, Belarusians
0.6%, Moldovans 0.5%, Crimean Tatars 0.5%, Bulgarians 0.4%, Hungarians
0.3%, Romanians 0.3%, Polish 0.3%, Jewish 0.2%, other 1.8% (2001). The
Ukrainian language belongs to the Slavic group of languages. The
highest population densities are found in the industrialized regions
and in the agriculturally productive forest-steppe belt. Currently the
average life expectancy in Ukraine stands at 62.3 years for men and
73.2 for women.
The middle class plays an important role in the economic and social
life of any country. A sufficiently large middle class (certain
estimates claim more than 30%) is laying the foundations of social
stability and economic development in any country. This middle-class
group is reported to include middle and lower-ranked management,
skilled workers, craftspeople, or people who run their own business.
